Earthworm compost is the best natural fertilizer or food for the growth of your healthy plants. With all the green issues in protecting the environment, people has realised the importance of using organic compost as natural fertiliser to the plants and gardens. Organic gardening compost is vital ingredient for the soil as it improve soil structure and retention of moisture for healthy growth of the plants and help to increase resistance to insect pest.
Earthworm composting or vermicomposting is one the best ways to make organic gardening compost using earthworms. Worms have been producing natural fertiliser which is rich in nutrient for the soil for years. They feed on dead leaves, rotten fruits and vegetables, animal manure such as horse or cow manure.
The earthworm will eat and digest these food and excrete droppings known as worm casting. The casting are normally deposited by the worms on the surface when they come out to take more food of rotting leaves into their burrows or to mate. Worm casting is also popularly known as earthworm compost, worm compost, vermin cast, vermicompost, worm humus or manure. Worm castings are odourless and also free from disease pathogens.
The earthworm helps to improve the soil structure in aerating the soil by turning, tunnelling and loosening the soil as its digest the food and moves along in the soil. It also helps to break down the soil nutrients into smaller quantities and this in turn gets easily absorbed by the root hairs directly into the plants.
Earthworm compost help to stabilize the soil as the water retention capacity of the soil gets increased. Worm casting are organic and known to be high in minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrogen etc. This natural fertiliser is easily absorbed by plants and is essential to promote healthy growth of the plants and vegetables.
The soil remains free of odour and this also helps to protect the plants from any diseases.
Another by product of earthworm compost is worm tea. This thick liquid collected at the bottom of the worm bin is highly concentrated and nutritious for the plants. It can cure plants disease such as curled leaves when applied directly to the leaves. Often you may have to reduce down the concentration by applying one part worm tea to 10 part water ratio.
